Divisions: Guidance Counseling

Guidance

Supervisor: This program falls under the general supervision of the superintendent
Purpose: The Perry-Hocking Educational Service Center is located in rural Appalachian Ohio. Many students that attend school in the PHESC area experience poverty, divorce, abuse and neglect at its worst. The purpose of the Elementary Counseling Consortium is to provide hope to families who have only known the frustration of poverty. PHESC counselors are the only local caregivers who share life choices with those who live without them.
Goals:
  • To provide individual counseling, help, and direction for elementary students, routines, personal experiences and social harmony.
  • To provide group counseling for students and parents who can gain insight to problems through the shared help of others who have experienced the same situation.
  • To provide classroom counseling for large groups of students to offer solutions to problems in a proactive manner
  • To assist the principal with test proctoring help along with ordering, distributing, and collecting proficiency tests.
  • To assist the principal with I.A.T. collaboration at all levels of the intervention process.
  • To assist the principal with daily activities as may be needed.
  • To provide emergency help for schools having a student behavioral crisis.

Strategies toward achieving goals:

  • To provide the most up to date counseling techniques for helping students, parents, and teachers.
  • To collaborate with other counselors to find new ways to solve problems.
  • To attend counselor conferences to find new ways to solve problems.
  • To keep a school counseling library where students, parents and teachers can read about solutions to a problem they have.
Deliverables: The Elementary Counseling Consortium at the PHESC provides numerous services for participating school districts. Primarily, the program provides individual, small group, and classroom counseling sessions. The program also assists principals with routine activities which is a welcome respite for them. Finally, the Elementary Counseling Consortium provides emergency help for any school having a student behavior problem or grief crisis.
